Types of Braces

Rosenzweig Orthodontics – Central Oregon’s Smile Specialist

Gone are the days when orthodontic treatment meant one-size-fits-all metal bands that wrapped around every tooth. Today, orthodontics is as much about lifestyle and personal preference as it is about straightening teeth. At Rosenzweig Orthodontics, we understand that every patient in Central Oregon has unique needs, goals, and comfort levels.

Whether you are a busy professional in Bend, a student athlete in Redmond, or a parent in Burns and Sisters looking for the best care for your child, we have a solution that fits your life. Dr. Rosenzweig is proud to offer a wide variety of advanced orthodontic appliances designed to move teeth faster, more comfortably, and more discreetly than ever before. Let’s explore the options available to help you achieve your perfect smile.

Traditional Metal Braces

When you think of orthodontics, this is likely the image that comes to mind—and for good reason. Traditional metal braces remain the most common type of treatment because they are exceptionally effective at treating even the most complex orthodontic issues.

Modern metal braces, however, are a far cry from the bulky hardware of the past. Today’s brackets are made of high-grade stainless steel and are significantly smaller, lower-profile, and more comfortable. They work by using metal brackets and archwires to apply steady, gentle pressure to your teeth.

One of the best features of metal braces, especially for our younger patients, is the ability to customize them. You can choose from a wide array of colored elastics (rubber bands) to show off your school spirit, celebrate a holiday, or just express your unique personality. They are durable, reliable, and a fantastic option for patients of all ages.

Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are a revolutionary leap forward in orthodontic technology. While they are made from the same durable materials as traditional braces (and are available in both metal and ceramic), the mechanics are quite different.

Traditional braces use tiny elastic bands or metal ties to hold the wire into the bracket. Self-ligating braces, on the other hand, use a specialized, built-in clip to hold the archwire in place. This “active” clip allows the wire to slide back and forth freely within the bracket.

Why does this matter?

  • Fewer Appointments: Because there are no elastics to replace or tighten, adjustments are often quicker and less frequent.
  • Less Friction: Without the friction of elastic ties, teeth can often move more freely and comfortably.
  • Easier Cleaning: With no rubber bands to trap plaque and food particles, keeping your braces clean is often simpler.

Clear (Ceramic) Braces

For patients who want the reliability of traditional braces without the “metal mouth” look, clear ceramic braces are an excellent choice. These brackets are made of a translucent ceramic material that blends seamlessly with the natural color of your teeth.

Ceramic braces are particularly popular among our older teen and adult patients in Central Oregon who want a more cosmetic, subtle option. While they work just like metal braces, they are visually much less prominent.

However, because ceramic is a slightly more brittle material than stainless steel, the brackets can be a bit larger. They also require a commitment to excellent oral hygiene to ensure the clear brackets stay stain-free. For these reasons, we typically recommend ceramic braces for the upper front teeth, where they have the biggest aesthetic impact.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners have changed the face of orthodontics. This system uses a series of custom-made, invisible, and removable acrylic trays to straighten your teeth without any wires or brackets. It’s the ultimate choice for patients who want a discreet treatment that doesn’t disrupt their daily life.

The benefits of clear aligners include:

  • Invisibility: Most people won’t even know you are wearing them.
  • No Dietary Restrictions: Because you take the aligners out to eat, you can still enjoy popcorn, apples, and all your favorite foods.
  • Easier Hygiene: Simply remove the trays to brush and floss normally—no threading floss under wires required!
  • Comfort: The smooth plastic is custom-molded to your teeth, eliminating the irritation that can sometimes occur with metal brackets.

Lingual Braces

If you are looking for a truly invisible solution, lingual braces might be the answer. Unlike traditional braces that are bonded to the front of your teeth, lingual braces are attached to the back (tongue side) of your teeth.

This unique placement means they are completely hidden from view when you smile. These appliances are 100% customized to the unique shape of your teeth, ensuring a perfect fit. Lingual braces are a fantastic option for adult professionals, actors, models, or musicians who play wind instruments and need a treatment that is completely undetectable to the outside world.
