Why Clear Aligners Are Great for Teens

Clear aligners have quickly become a favorite choice among our teenage patients, and it is easy to see why. They offer a level of freedom and flexibility that traditional braces simply cannot match.

Here is why teens love them:

  • Virtually Invisible: The clear plastic aligners are incredibly discreet. Most people won’t even notice your teen is wearing them, allowing their natural smile to shine through during treatment.
  • No Food Restrictions: One of the biggest complaints about braces is the “do not eat” list. With clear aligners, teens simply pop them out to eat. Popcorn at the movies, apples, and sticky snacks are all still on the menu.
  • Comfortable & safe: Without metal brackets to rub against cheeks or wires to poke gums, clear aligners are generally more comfortable. They are also safer for contact sports, eliminating the risk of mouth cuts from hardware.
  • Easier Hygiene: Brushing and flossing around braces can be a chore. Clear aligners are removable, so teens can brush and floss normally, keeping their teeth clean and gums healthy throughout treatment.

How Clear Aligners Work for Teens

The process of getting clear aligners is high-tech and straightforward, designed to be as efficient as possible for busy families.

  1. Digital Scanning: We start with a complimentary consultation where we use a digital scanner to create a precise 3D image of your teen’s teeth. No uncomfortable, gooey impressions are required!
  2. Custom Treatment Plan: Dr. Rosenzweig uses these images to map out the exact movements of the teeth. We can even show you a virtual preview of what the final smile will look like before treatment begins.
  3. The Aligner Series: Your teen will receive a series of custom-made, clear plastic aligners. Each set is worn for about one to two weeks, gradually moving the teeth into the desired position.
  4. Tracking Progress: We generally see our teen patients every 8-10 weeks to check progress and hand out the next sets of aligners. This means fewer appointments and less time missing school or extracurricular activities.
  5. Compliance Indicators: Many aligners for teens come with small blue dot indicators that fade as they are worn. This helps parents—and Dr. Rosenzweig—ensure the aligners are being worn enough to be effective.

Common Orthodontic Issues Clear Aligners Can Fix

A common misconception is that clear aligners are only for minor cosmetic fixes. The truth is, modern clear aligner technology is powerful enough to correct a wide range of orthodontic issues.

Dr. Rosenzweig successfully uses clear aligners to treat:

  • Crowding: When there isn’t enough room in the jaw for all teeth to fit normally.
  • Spacing: Closing gaps between teeth.
  • Overbites & Underbites: Correcting how the upper and lower jaws meet.
  • Crossbites: Fixing instances where upper teeth sit inside lower teeth.

During your consultation, we will determine if clear aligners are the right tool for your teen’s specific smile goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are clear aligners effective for teens?
Yes, absolutely. When worn according to instructions, clear aligners are just as effective as traditional braces for treating many common orthodontic issues. In fact, for some teens, the ability to maintain better oral hygiene makes them a superior choice.

How long does my teen need to wear clear aligners each day?
Consistency is the most important factor in success. Teens need to wear their aligners for 20 to 22 hours every day. They should only be taken out for eating, drinking (anything other than water), and brushing/flossing.

Can my teen eat and drink with clear aligners in?
No. Teens must remove their aligners before eating or drinking anything other than cool water. Eating with them in can crack the plastic, and sugary drinks can get trapped against the teeth, leading to cavities or staining the aligners.

How do we clean clear aligners?
Cleaning is simple. Teens should brush their aligners gently with a toothbrush and water every time they brush their teeth. We also recommend rinsing them when they are taken out to eat. Avoid using hot water, as it can warp the plastic.

Are clear aligners better than braces for teens?
“Better” depends on the patient. Clear aligners offer better aesthetics and hygiene, but they require discipline to wear them for 22 hours a day. Braces are fixed, meaning compliance isn’t an issue, but they are more visible and require dietary changes. Dr. Rosenzweig will help you decide which is the best fit for your teen’s lifestyle and dental needs.
