Congratulations! The day you have been waiting for has finally arrived. Your braces are off, your aligners are done, and you are looking in the mirror at a smile that is straight, beautiful, and uniquely yours. Reaching this milestone is a huge achievement, and we are so proud of the hard work you have put into your treatment.
However, the journey to a perfect smile doesn’t end the moment the appliances come off. Now begins the most critical phase of your orthodontic treatment: retention. At Rosenzweig Orthodontics, we want to ensure that the smile you invested so much time and effort into stays spectacular for a lifetime. For our patients in Central Oregon, from Bend, Redmond, Burns and Sisters, understanding retention is the key to lasting results.
Why Retainers Are Essential
You might be wondering, “My teeth are straight now, so why do I need another appliance?” The answer lies in biology. After we move your teeth into their ideal positions, the bone, gums, and muscles surrounding them need time to adapt to this new arrangement.
Without a retainer, your teeth have a natural tendency to shift back toward their original positions. This process is known as orthodontic relapse or regression. A retainer acts as a stabilizer. It holds your teeth firmly in their new spots while the surrounding tissues reorganize and solidify. Think of your retainer as an insurance policy for your smile; it protects your investment and ensures your teeth remain as straight as they were on the day your braces were removed.
Types of Retainers
We know that every patient is different, which is why we offer different types of retainers to suit various needs and lifestyles. During your final appointments, Dr. Rosenzweig will discuss which option is best for your specific case.
Traditional Removable Retainers (Hawley)
This is the classic retainer you might recognize. It features a metal wire that wraps around the front of your teeth, attached to an acrylic arch that fits comfortably against the roof of your mouth.
- Benefits: They are incredibly durable and adjustable. If minor tooth movement occurs, we can often tighten the wire to correct it.
Aligner-Style Retainers (Essix)
These look very similar to clear aligners like Invisalign. They are made of clear, transparent plastic and fit snugly over your entire arch of teeth.
- Benefits: They are virtually invisible, making them a popular choice for patients who want a discreet solution. They are custom-molded to your newly aligned teeth for a perfect fit.
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
A fixed retainer consists of a thin wire bonded directly to the back (tongue-side) of your front teeth. It is typically placed on the lower teeth but can be used on the upper teeth as well.
- Benefits: It works 24/7 without you having to remember to put it in. It is an excellent option for preventing the lower front teeth from crowding over time.
Choosing the Right Retainer for You
Selecting the right retainer often comes down to a balance between lifestyle preferences and orthodontic needs.
Removable Retainers (Hawley or Essix)
- Pros: You can take them out to eat, brush, and floss, which makes maintaining oral hygiene much easier. They are unobtrusive and generally comfortable.
- Cons: Because they are removable, they can be lost or broken. They rely entirely on your discipline; if you forget to wear them, your teeth will shift.
Fixed Retainers
- Pros: You don’t have to worry about keeping track of them or remembering to put them in. They provide constant retention for the teeth most likely to shift.
- Cons: They require extra effort to clean. You will need to use floss threaders or a water flosser to clean between the wire and your teeth to prevent tartar buildup.
Caring for Your Retainer
Your retainer sits inside your mouth, so keeping it clean is vital for your oral health. A dirty retainer can harbor bacteria and cause bad breath. Here is how to keep your appliance in top shape:
- Clean it Daily: Brush your removable retainer every time you brush your teeth. Use a soft toothbrush and mild soap or non-abrasive toothpaste.
- Keep it Safe: When your retainer is not in your mouth, it should always be in its case. wrapping it in a napkin is the number one way retainers get thrown away accidentally!
- Avoid Heat: Never wash your retainer in hot water or leave it in a hot car. High temperatures can warp the plastic, ruining the fit.
- Deep Clean Occasionally: You can soak your retainer in a denture cleaner or a specialized retainer cleaner once a week to keep it fresh and free of buildup.
