Below, you will find answers to some of the most common questions we receive from patients and families across Central Oregon.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a specialized field of dentistry focused on diagnosing, preventing, and treating dental and facial irregularities. While general dentistry maintains the overall health of your teeth, orthodontics works to align the teeth and jaws. This not only creates a beautiful smile but also improves function, making it easier to bite, chew, and speak correctly.

What is an Orthodontist?

An orthodontist is a dental specialist. After completing dental school, an orthodontist like Dr. Rosenzweig undergoes an additional two to three years of intensive, full-time training in an accredited residency program. This advanced education focuses exclusively on tooth movement, jaw function, and facial development. When you choose an orthodontist, you are selecting a provider with the highest level of expertise in straightening teeth and creating healthy smiles.

Common Questions About Braces

What are braces?
Braces are orthodontic appliances used to gradually and safely move your teeth into their correct positions. While traditional metal braces are widely known, modern options also include clear ceramic braces and discrete Invisalign® clear aligners. Dr. Rosenzweig will help you determine which treatment option is best suited for your specific smile goals and lifestyle.

How long do I have to wear braces?
The duration of treatment varies for each patient. It depends on factors like the complexity of your case and how your teeth respond to treatment. In general, most patients wear braces for anywhere from 6 to 30 months, with the average treatment time being about 22 months.

Do braces hurt?
You can expect to feel some mild soreness or pressure for a few days after your braces are first placed and following adjustments. This is a normal sign that your teeth are beginning to move. Any discomfort is temporary and can typically be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers and by eating soft foods.

Will braces interfere with my activities?
No, you can continue to enjoy all your favorite activities! Whether you play sports, sing, or play a musical instrument, you can still participate while wearing braces. We do recommend wearing a mouthguard during contact sports to protect your braces and your smile.

Taking Care of Your Smile

Excellent oral hygiene is more important than ever during orthodontic treatment. Food particles can easily get trapped in your braces, which can lead to plaque buildup if not cleaned properly.

  • Brush & Floss: Brush your teeth thoroughly after every meal and floss at least once a day. We can provide special tools to make flossing with braces easier.
  • Be Mindful of Your Diet: Avoid very hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could damage your braces. This includes things like hard candies, chewing gum, and whole nuts.
  • Continue Dental Checkups: It is vital to continue seeing your family dentist every six months for routine cleanings and checkups. Healthy teeth and gums are the foundation for a successful orthodontic outcome.
